From G-Junior project trainees, it took just a short period before Golf-Mike Pichaya and Pirat Nitipaisalkul became the fastest rising stars in Thai music scene. Now they have gone beyond that because they go international to work with Japanese superstar, Tomohisa Yamashita or YamaP as a new trio called GYM that won Japanese fans' hearts and resulted in their No.1 single on Oricon chart.
Tell us about the work of GYM
Golf : The work for GYM single took about 1 month. We recorded in both Thailand and Japan and filmed the PV in Japan. I was excited to get the chance to work with YamaP, the superstar in Japan. Now we've got a plan to work for an album. We're talking over it but still haven't concluded whether the music style will be. We'll work on it soon.
Mike : Working with Japanese crews was fun. They work as a team, do things fast and they're serious about time. You cannot be even a bit late. For example in TV shows, they counted in second. Even if we're still talking, but they cut the scene when it's time 'cause the next program is waiting.
Is Japanese language a big problem for you ?
Golf : Actually we've learnt basic Japanese from school 'cause it's one of our favourite language and we thought we would be able to use it in the future. Before we went to Japan, we also took a short Japanese course for basic conversations.
Mike : And we randomed some frequently asked interview questions, and then figured how we should answer in Japanese. It was just a short course to use when we got on TV program, go on public or got interviewed. So we were able to communicate a bit but not as much as we usually do with Brother/Sister Thai press or fans here.
Is it true that Japanese fans cannot get closer to artists ?
Mike : True. In Japan, you cannot ask artists for autographs, and photos either. When we go out, there'll be guards in black suits around us. If we were surrounded by fans, they will tell us to just walk pass. So, we rather feel sorry for fans there 'cause usually we're close with our fans here. Sometimes as we're used to giving out autographs, so we did it there. (Didn't you get reproached ?)
Golf : Absolutely. The hotel arthority reproached us when we gave out some autographs because it would cause a stur. And it really did 'cause more fans gathered in and exceeded a control. Overthere, although artists walk pass without a glance, the fans wouldn't get angry. They understand it. It's like their tradition to be like that so we have to try to adapt ourselves on that.
*Regina's Note : Stick to P'Bird's trend N'Golf and N'Mike! If you want the career longevity and you wanna be loved by people, you'd better follow his trend. Bird Thongchai has never turned his back on fans. *
So, they flew to meet you in Thailand instead ?
Mike : Yes. At The Show Must Go On concert, we saw fans from several countries and that made me surprised. And at the Meet & Greet after the concert, we got to meet fans from other countries.
Golf : Yep Yep. There's one from Spain. Today the fan also waited at the lobby (GMM). I'm very surprised. I used to surf websites and I saw that there were fans from UK and America but we haven't met them before. And then we get to meet them here, we are surprised.
Is everything beyond your expectations ?
Mike : We didn't expect these at all. At first, we thought we would just sing with YamaP, that was amazing enough. But it came out that the single went to No.1 on Oricon chart and earned us many new fans.
Golf : Oh...pra jao george! (Oh ma gosh!!!) It's too much. (Laughs) We still find it unbelievable.
You're gonna take it seriously ?
Mike : Yeah. We'd like to take more singing course so that our singing will be better. We won't just stop here.
Golf : I'd like to learn more into music. I'd like study about music making via computer. I'd like to write my own songs. I'd like to make my own favourite style of songs 'cause I'll know how I should dance to them. And if we have our own beat, we'll be able to dance to it more efficiently.
You wanna study more ?
Mike : Yeah. We'd like to take singing course to make my singing stronger. I'd like to take dancing course too. But we still haven't got time indeed. We've been working all the time. (Why don't you find personal teachers ?) How would we pay for that ? (Laughs) Actually, if we could, we'd like to. We need singing and dancing teachers. If someone come across this line, please consider hiring teachers for us na krub.
Golf : Actually, it depends on the company whether they will approve us on this. But I do think that I'd like to have an electone in our van so that we could learn to write songs while we're on our van.
You wanna prove those bashers wrong ? Those people who said you're just pretty boys and got dressed up and made singing ?
Mike : We've heard about those who don't like us. They might think that we were just made singing. But indeed, this is what we really love to do. We had to learn, we had to do many things to get where we're now. And then we got to hear those bashing words, we are so sad na krub. But that has driven us to try harder, and we get stronger. If we were worried about that too much, we wouldn't be able to keep on. Like what we said in the concert "Thanks to those who don't like us 'cause they've driven us this far."
Do you think that you've succeeded in your career now ?
Golf : We still would like to keep on working. We wanna be successful in our own standard and others' standards. We'd like to have a chance to do what we would like to do and can make people like it too. We would like people to see that we take our career seriously.
Mike : We haven't succeeded yet. Some people said "hey. you've gone across borders. That's enough." But for us, that's not the end point. We wanna fly higher to the point that people look at us as a role model. We'd like to be a bridge for them to step follow.
Golf and Mike are ready to fly. We're gonna be the wind beneath their wings that support these 2 guys and help them fly as highest as they've dreamt.
